A clean computer is key to a faster computer. I am sure you have already checked for viruses and spyware/adaware. If not run the 3 scans below.
Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.
Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/

Well, you can add more RAM, and also use the MSCONFIG command from the "Run" choice box to find out which processes are automatically being loaded at system startup. Often there are programs that clutter up that list that can be removed or disabled...things like the RealPlayer update, etc. Be careful doing that, though, and only disable one thing at a time, then reboot, to make sure what you want to have working will still work. If not, go back and re-enable that particular item again. Good luck.

When elimination of extraneous processes has been accomplished, the least expensive way to improve performance has always been to increase memory. If you are able to add more memory to your PC you can significantly improve speed through eliminating the thrashing caused by transferring pages between main memory and disk.

You would, of course, need to back up all programs you want to safe, but a sure fire way to clean up your computer is to re-format your hard drive. Save everything onto a disk (or more) and then re-formate the hard drive. Your computer will be as fresh, and fast, as the day you bought it.

Go to msconfig and see if you have programs running in start up mode that you do not need. Find a good program for virus checks and for ads left on your computer to track what sites you go to. Hope you get some other great suggestions...BB

use programs (eg virus checkers etc) that use less memory and so on, have less programs load on startup..basically the less that is running the better..
the less you have installed the better, and the more hard drive space is available the better (ive seen people recommend that you keep a third of your windows hard drive free for example)
get the latest drivers for things eg directx, graphics card drivers etc if you wish to improve game performance (plus run them in a lower resolution, lower detail etc, no anti aliasing etc for more performance boots).

You could try getting some more RAM (Random Access Memory), getting rid of any Spyware on your computer, (Spyware can really slow down your computer), or deleting unnecessary files.

Go to this site http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
It list loads of programs that load when windows boots up, they also inform you if it is ok or not to disable such program(s)
Most programs that are installed on new computer are not needed upon startup in which case they only slow down your computer
