Yes that would be fine. I used to turn mine off at night sometimes and then turn it back on in the morning. Don't forget to turn it back on though!

The pump should not be so loud. Have you taken the pump apart and cleaned insode of it? I know its a pain, but really slimey, yucky gunk builds up in there and can make your pump loud. If you clean it out, it might run better for you. But it is hard to listen and relax wathcing TV while a loud pump is going on, really an hour or two max is all I would leave it off. Any longer, could hurt your fish.

Good Luck!!

Your filter pump shouldn't be noisy, mine was very noisy yesterday evening, so today I looked at it and it wasn't working properly, the actual motor was making a noise but the little cog like wheel inside was blocked, now that it has had a good clean it is running silently again, take it apart and see if it is blocked by something. In answer to you original question, it won't hurt your fish too much if switched off for no more than a couple of hours, I wouldn't turn it off for 5 though.

I wouldnt turn it off at all, unless you are cleaning the tank. mine was loud too but sometimes if you will sit it on a different surface or something like that it will make the noise quiter. But if the pump is off for probably more than an hour or so (all though im not sure of the exact amount of time) your fish will die.

If you are talking about an air pump there are several things you can do to quiet the pump.

I used to put mine in a show box with foam on the bottom. Set the pump on the foam and just have an hole for the power cord and the air tube. The sound is then greatly muffled.

As for turning it off, you can certainly turn it off but I wouldn't leave it off for more than an hour or 2 a most.

No. Regardless of the noise, you can't shut it off. And yes, nitrogen build up will kill the fish. As will algae in massive quantities... The filter is, as you describe it, labouring. So, get a bigger pump! Aaaargh...
Fish need reasonably clean and oxygenated water. Without a clean and aerated tank, you're going to lose them.
Perhaps you need a cat or a dog - or a rat. Still, they also need water.

By pump, I assume you mean Air pump & not filter?
If you have a power filter installed, you may not even need to aerate the water at all! All you need to do is to place the outlet of the filter close to the surface, so that the current agitates the water surface. Surface agitation is much more effective than an aerator ( With airstone ? ) in getting sufficient oxygen into the tank.

You should keep the pump on all the time. it helps the make oxygen in the water.
I have a silent pump. You might have to get a different pump. I have my tank in the living room and you can not even hear it if you are sitting next to the tank

Sorry with a fish tank you need to have the pump running continuously. Try to isolate the pump if it is external with polystyrene, this works really well. Please just remember that the fish didn't ask to live in your lounge.

i would find out what's causing it to make so much noise. It shouldn't be very noisy. is it possible to take it apart and find what's causing the noise? or purchase a new filter?

sorry but you should leave the filter on all the time for the fishes sake. good luck
