I know nothing about computers, I had to ask how to turn it on. Now it disconnects me from internet A LOT, and at the worst times. I expect it any minute now too. How do I fix this? Do I need to buy a new computer? This one is part old and part new.. I thought I was buying a legal system. When it says there are upgrades for my computer, it wont do them. Please help, I'm about to give up on the whole thing! Why doesn't it just tell me what to to and where to go to do it?

First, try to get your money. Cancel your check. Call your credit card company. Report to Better Business Bureau. Report this to Microsoft. This may even be a police issue. If you do keep it. (Mistake) I think FREE upgrades would not hurt. The disconnect problem is probably from you Internet service provider.

Microsoft has detected that the version of Windows XP that you're running has been copied, which, according to them, is illegal. They punish you for this, whether you knew it was illegal or not when you purchased it, by degrading the performance of your machine, and not allowing you access to Windows updates or downloads.

However, you do not need to buy a whole new computer. You just have to buy a new copy of Windows XP Professional. I am not sure whether you will have to do a full reinstall or just register your copy, though, once you bought it. I would contact Windows support and ask them how to go about making your copy of Windows legal.

Also, once you do go about buying a new copy of XP, have your first step be contacting the store you bought the system from. Once you point out that you paid full price for a copy of pirated software, you can threaten them with either legal action or reporting them (each of which would cause them to loose business and money). They will more than likely give you a refund of the WIndows XP purchase, or give you a new copy of it.

Good luck!

Ok, someone did you a total disservice. Return the computer, get your money back. I assume you bought it from a business. Get your money back! threaten to take them to small claims court, call the better business bureau and contact the attorney general's office if they won't give it back.

By keeping this thing you could just be buying a whole bunch of headaches.

Next, take your money and go to an Apple store, the people there will help you, teach you, they have free classes. If you have a problem they will fix your computer, overall, they are rated #1 for service.

The Mac interface is much more intuitive then Windows and like I said, they will answer every question that you may have.

Don't buy yourself headaches, life gives you enough of them, the computer should make your life easier.

I would ask for my money back right away. You are going to have problems. You will not get many security updates from Microsoft. Sure you may be able to find them on the net, but that brings a whole new set of issues. Viruses. If you can not take it back to who ever you bought it from, you should go out and buy a legal copy of windows.

Where did you buy it? Go back and demand a full refund for that computer, or at least a 120$ to cover buying a new legal version of Windows XP. Threaten legal action, because you can pursue legal action, and you can win.

You either need to buy a new version of windows and install it, or you need to buy a new computer, your choice :]

If you have all your receipts and are willing to turn the "bleep" that sold you the computer, in to Microsoft for selling you a pirated operating system; then Microsoft will make your Windows geniune free of charge.

I would contact Microsoft ASAP.

Everything everyone else has written is good advice.

The lesson here is to deal with solid companies (e.g. Dell).
You'll pay a little more but you get what you pay for.

Microsoft is nothing but trouble. Sell the PC and get a Mac! You will be glad you did.
