Most airline companies contract out to vendors who prepare the food. What we end up getting if we are on a long haul flight is upgraded cafeteria food. However, some airlines, like Cathay Pacific have nice food even in coach with menus and top chef's preparing the meals. Now if you travel business or first class, the type and quality of the food is exceptional, especially on airlines such as UAE. It really depends, on where your seats are located (ie, business or first), the length of your flight, and the airline itself.
Personally, if I am on a flight for more then 3 hours, give me some bloody food, I don't mind paying a little extra, but that food better be descent quality and not a stale sandwich and yogurt. Its a matter of cost cutting, but I see no savings. Cheers....

I have not flown for a while, but I remember the food on planes going from state to state being very filling. I think loaded with fats that made me sleepy being in the position you are sitting to eat, and dang it always fell asleep before the movie. The best experience I have had enjoying airline food was in Europe. There is a site I looked up on the best airline food.......and may start traveling again, but there is nothing like home cooking . I drink plenty of water wholesome snacks and can enjoy a good movie. Caterer's for airlines try very hard to provide excellent nourishment to customers, just like hospital staff.

Unless I'm upgraded, I always bring my own food. If it's morning, I usually take a tupperware with cereal and raisins, and then get free milk from the cart when it passes through. Don't forget a plastic spoon, though. Hard boiled eggs, peanut butter sandwiches, fast-food from the airport are all better than what the airlines fed us before they started charging for food. Continental, as someone mentioned above, is a wonderful exception to this rule, and I recently flew them and had a pretty OK meal on board.

Depends which ariline and where you sit. The Asian carriers have some pretty good stuff in the front. Typically the US carriers have the worst service and food.

all i usually get are peanuts or pretzels and a half a glass of pepsi.last time i told her at these prices i want a full glass for the money i spent she went ahead and gave it to me but i dont think she liked it. you would think that money they charge for flights these days they could at least give you a descent meal makes you wonder where the rest of it is going

I stay away from it. I bring my own food if I can. Except for the really long flights.
