Who ever said playing video games is not healthy. Fact is video games improve hand and eye cordination. As far as how long, I have read in video game manuals after every 5 hours of play you should take an hour break.

I believe it depends on the game. If the kids are playing games such as chess (as dorky or nerdy as that sounds) then I say go ahead and let them play for however long they want (if they have no other competitors to play with). I believe it will increase their mental capabilities. There ARE games out there that do help. However, there are kinda pointless games out there, such as the one I play, Warcraft III, but I believe that these kind of games (Real Time Strategy or just Turn Based Strategy games) are helpful as well. RTS games can promote quicker reflexes and adaptation based on what the opponents are doing. TB games allow players to think things out before they do it, and also allows for adaptation as well. These kinds of games, possibly about 2 hours a day, but with breaks between playing. Also after homework and chores are finished =)

Children are totally indvidual. I myself am 15 and have always loved playing them. It's not very healthy though and after an hour or 2 you can get aggressive for no good reason. I'm glad I learned this myself rather than through restrictions. I think "as little as possible" is a good guideline, although I think an hour every 3rd day or so is okay too.

I limited my children to 1 hour a day. This way they don't play out the game and have to get a new one so soon. Also, if any arguing goes on between the children...(ex: My turn, you have had it too long.... ) Warn them once that if you hear any arguing that you will turn it off and stick to your word!! They will learn to work out their differences without fighting!

I have a rule of thumb: half an hour of playing video games, then AT LEAST 1 hour of doing something physical (and away from the blasted machinery). Works a charm!

I played 24 hours straight once to try & earn an Elite rating - but then im a games lover.
RTFM, most of them say take a break every hour or 2.

Probably about 30 minutes to an hour is enough for a child. It also depends on the age of your child, and what game they are playing.

I would also say about an hour if not less. They should be busy with more natural learning games instead of video games.

On a daily basis, just take out the time needed for them to wolf down a couple of bags of crisps, a Mars bar and a can of Coke and then let them get on with playing again.
