Well, I must say that there is no "safer" way to shut down your computer - weather it be via the power button or te start menu. What I am trying to say is, when you shutdown your computer it DOES NOT affect the hard drive, nor DOES NOT result in system failure. The way a computer works it is is waiting for you to doe something and it is putting the other hardware on standby, and it is literally saying: "Is he going to press the 'A' Key?" and does that over, and over, and over, until you actually do press the A key, and when you save and when you power off, it does not do any harm.

It damages the harddrive. While the harddrive is running, and it is all the sudden shut off, it makes the harddrive run slower nest time and deletes all the unsaved files.

Files being used by programs may not close properly. When you later try to start the program it may crash with bad files.
