What I always do is squeeze 1 whole lemon into 1.5 cups of hot (not boiling) water. I used this even when I was on the Atkins diet (a diet very strict with the sugar policy as I'm sure you've heard) without any problems. You could always try tea as well! :) I hope you feel better soon!!! Winter illnesses are the worst, aren't they? I'm sick right now with a sinus infection and I'm ready to explode. hahaha Well, off to make myself some lemon water... Happy holidays!
EDIT: Ooh! I forgot to add, it does make the sore throat worse for about 30 seconds, but then the sting quickly dissipates.

Hot Tea - You can find it at your local store the best for sore throat and a cough is a mint tea. Almost all herbal teas are Caffeine-free, fat-free and sugar free. But the mint is the best one. You can also get a sugar-free/fat-free hard peppermint candy and this will also help, if you can't get to that cup of tea. Both tea and candy are relatively inexpensive. Hope this helps you. P.S. the mint is better if it's peppermint it's a stronger mint also helps open the sinuses, you can also steep mint leaves bought at the grocery store after they are hot put liquid with mint leaves in a bowl and place a towel over you head and put your face over the bowl this will help open the sinuses at well.

Taking a shower. Inhaling the steam is said to sooth a sore throat and cough. I don't know about what you said, though. I've heard that milk coats the throat so it actually makes sore throats worse. I've always been told to stay away from dairy products, and foods that are too spicy or rich, since they irritate the throat.

Sage tea with lemon for the sore throat. Gargle, don't swallow. Or 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar in 1/4 cup hot water. Gargle.
Mullein tea for the cough. Ah, you said common household, didn't you?
Fenugreek & Thyme for the cough. Boil the Fenugreek seeds for 5 or 6 minutes, turn off the heat and add the Thyme leaves. Let steep 5 minutes, strain and drink. Breaks up mucous.
Put 2-3 drops Eucalyptus oil in a cup of boiling water and inhale the fumes.
Peppermint tea. Hot ginger tea. Inhale the fumes while waiting for it to cool, then drink.

Hot honey and lemon drink. I'm not sure how much lemon juice to use, but a couple of t spoons of honey should do it. If that's too much sugar try putting less and see if it works.
My grandma always swore by sugar and onion. Finely chop onion and sprinkle a couple of t spoons of sugar. Cover it and let the sugar draw the juice from the onion. It makes a kind of syrup. About 20ml should be enough to give some relief.
Sorry they are not sugar free. Maybe you can just lessen the sugar/honey content. I don't know if it will still work but its worth a try.

Sore throat: soak chopped up garlic in water for a few minutes. Strain off the garlic and gargle the water as often as you wish. The cough: find a product called Umcka made by natures way. The remedy was originaly from Africa. It was used to get your "wind" back. It helps you breath.

Tea with real HONEY - sugar yes, but we're talking a spoonful for god sakes. If not, try tisanes (herbal teas) - various flavours include some for sore throats as well (check it out at the store - depends on your area).
