I once threw moth balls at a group of racoons in our back yard and they left. Not sure if it was because of the smell or because they were afraid of me hitting them with little white smelly pellets, but it worked.
However, I have also heard about urine from predators, such as a fox, wolf, or bear. But kind of hard to go ask a bear to pee in a cup...

Dead things. Raccoons would often get into my grandfather's sweet corn patch and the only repellent that worked as far as smell goes is using the bodies of coons he had trapped as deterrents.
As a non-violent, no-kill method, he also would put a radio out in the field. It didn't have to be on very loud, but it did the trick, at least for awhile til they got used to it.

My great grandmother always said that she would heavily sprinkle powdered red pepper or cayunne pepper around the edge of her garden a few times during the growing season.

Ammonia
I used a pressure sprayer filled with ammonia to clear them out from under my house and then I sealed up the entry place.

Do you really want a foul odor around your house? The only one I can think of is skunk.
Best bet is to get a couple good dogs.

50/50 dilution of chlorox and water...poured on the ground around structures that you don't want them on. We had them climbing up the poles that support our deck, so that they could get to the suet feeders...and it worked like charm. note* of course...don't apply it on anything that a bleach application could harm... :-)
