The first day of Christmas is, obviously, Christmas Day itself, i.e. December 25th. This makes January 5th the 12th day. But that's a problem, because January 6th (Epiphany) is usually considered the date of "Twelfth Night". I think this is more of that strange date counting that leads to there somehow being three days between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

One thing's for sure, however: the 12 days of Christmas come AFTER Christmas. AFTER. NOT before. (I'm so sick and tired of people who take their decorations down before the new year. I'm also perplexed by Christmas-tree disposal schedules where the last collection day is January 2nd.)

Actually, the original '12 days of Christmas' started with the Solstice and ended with January 1st. It was moved during the middle ages to start the night of Christmas and end January 6th. This the tradition in France and part of Canada.

That was a good question. I had never heard of "Epiphany day" until I read the answers and looked it up...

I had always thought the 12 days were right before Christmas, with Christmas being the final day.

Cool...

To clarify Martha's perplexion: it used to be that a "day" was deemed to start at sundown, and that is still the case in christian church and Jewish calendars. E.g. the Jewish Sabbath begins on Fri night, though it generally refers to all day Saturday. Similarly, a Catholic "Sunday Mass" starts being offered on Saturday evening. Hence the 12 days of Christmas end in the morning of Epiphany, January 6.
