However, he is not fat, he has also gotten 3 inches longer. She was having trouble just breastfeeding because he eats a lot. She tried pumping but could not get enough out. because he empties both breasts. He couldn't tolerate regular formula, she tried enfamil with iron, and also w/o iron, because of so much gas and crying quite a lot in discomfort. The doctor switched him to soy, and he seems to be doing much better on that. I don't know a lot about soy formula. Is is just as healthy? I know a lot of babies take it.

I've heard that soy is not as healthy, and lacks in some chemicals that milk based formula contains. However, since your daughter is also breastfeeding there is no cause to worry.

I breastfed my oldest son for about a week. He screamed and cried and had the most terrible diarrhea that would scald his little bottom. I didn't know at the time all I needed to do was stop drinking milk myself and he would have been fine. I had never breastfed a baby before and was so new to it. I didn't even have the support of the hospital staff when we were still in the hospital. My husband was the only one who supported me 100% but he didn't know all the details either. No one ever came to me and explained all this to me about what not to eat and such. I did eventually put him on the soy based formula and within a week, things were sooooo much better with him. I would advise your daughter to eliminate milk from her diet for the time being and see if that helps. She can also supplement with the soy formula. It is just as healthy as a milk based one. It has all the vitamins and minerals in it that the milk based ones do. And depending on what his birth weight was, a baby tends to double their birth weight in the first 3 months. So, even if he was a 7 lb baby, he's still normal. He's just had his first (and certainly not his last) growth spurt. I wish you and your daughter the very best!!!! Good luck!!!!!!

I went through this with my daughter, now 8 months. She wouldn't latch so I never breastfed. The regular formula was making her very gasy so I switched her to soy milk. And she has done much better since. I actually haven't looked in to what the difference in the vitamins and nutrients are in the soy milk from regular formula, but I do believe it to be just as healthy. She too is a very big baby. She weighs 23 lbs and is 27 inches long...very big for her age. I did notice the rapid growth after I switched her formula, but I can't say that it really did contribute to her rapid growth. Overall she is healthy and not gasy, that's what matters.

If your daughter wants to exclusively breastfeed him she needs to stop giving him a bottle, nurse him more often, and drink lots and lots of water to help build her milk supply. If she doesn't mind giving him formula then he is just fine. Babies who are breastfed tend to gain weight more quickly during the first few months and then taper off a bit. Babies who drink soy formula also tend to gain more weight than those on milk based formula. I don't think it really means much in the long run. I exclusively breastfed my daughter for 8 months. I then introduced solid foods and continued to nurse her until she was old enough for milk. She was a very chubby baby but is now a thin, tall, healthy 4 year old. Your grandson is probably very healthy. Enjoy him. Just remember, just because he is big doesn't mean he is hungry. Make sure you don't introduce solid foods too young as he may become more susceptible to food allergies.

My friend used soy formula and breastfed and her son is a bigger boy too. He is 16 months old and is as big as my 22 month old. (my son is wearing 18-24 months and size 4 diapers) He is wearing 18 months clothes and size 5-6 diapers. So he can be big because of the soy milk. She should keep breastfeeding because this will help against childhood obesiety. Good luck to your daughter.

There are vitamin supplements if his mother is concerned. When breastfeeding - he should have a Vitamin D supplement. Soy is very healthy (soy beans - vegetable) There have been some concerns with cows milk and immune system interference (thought to be a factor in diabetes). Try gripe water if the gas persists. Burp him by having his belly pressed up on your shoulder (a bit higher up). Also, pushing his knees to his stomach when lying down helps get the plumbing flowing...

I am not a big fan of soy formula. Soy, IMO, is not all it is cracked up to be. It is very expensive, but Neutramigen is milk based, but the milk proteins are further broken down so it is easier to digest. It is recommended for babies with severe colic. She can also drink Mother's Milk tea and take herbs such as fenugreek and Blessed Thistle to help her increase her supply. I would simply feed the baby more often. He is a big boy. Congratulations grandma!

wow, he sounds JUST like my son!!!
my kid is HUGE and he's only 3 months. i tried nursing, but had to start supplementing with formula early on b/c i couldn't keep up with the little guy. he is just as big as the 6 month olds in his class, it's wild!!
i get these " oh he's so cute. how old is he?" then, i tell them he's 3 months and i get this "oh" as if to say "wow, lady, your kid is a giant!!!" ahahahahah!!
it's all o.k. though b/c he is healthy and just a big kid.

anyway......
we also had issues with gas and also a lot of spitting up. my pediatrician didn't switch us to soy, however, i knwo it's just as good as regular formula, it just helps those with tricky tummies.
the pediatrician said that he was at his peak of digestive issues and just let it ride out and he'll be fine.

so, i'm sure the soy is fine (remember that formula is all FDA regulated!) and when he gets older then maybe she can switch back if she is concerned, but i wouldn't be.

take care and enjoy that big boy b/c they are growing sooooo fast!!!!

soy formula is just as healthy, if not healthier.
my first baby was on enfamil with iron...she's slightly husky...
my second baby was on enfamil soy...she's perfect.
they're both growing alot, and they both have GREAT appetites.
also, while i was thinking about my answer, my first daughter, she's a picky eater, and only likes to eat meats and carbs...but my second daughter eats a much healthier diet...not sure if it has anything to do with the soy formula she was drinking...but it's an idea, right??
i'm sure your grandson will be just fine.
