Scam. wannabe poets should be careful with places like that. You should be paid for your work and not the other way around.

Once upon a time they were a very good site, but sadly as has been mentioned they have gone down the path of least resistance. I was featured in one of their anthologies several years ago, and the material contained therin is by and large very high quality. Granted there's some "filler" but it does not make up the majority of the book. The site itself has become hopelesly clogged with ads, which is one reason I no longer post there.
I am glad to have had the experience, but it's unlikely I would submit any serious works there again.
I hope this helps...

It's a total scam! There are many writers out there waiting to get there stuff read, and don't know that they shouldn't have to pay to get their fame. Poetry.com knows this, so they put up this big money-maker! If your writing and luck are good, the money will come to you, you don't have to pay!

I used to love the site, but now it has so many banner adds that I lose the poetry. I can’t add new poetry without going through a million sponsors and ruining my credit. So many new sites for posting poetry have come along that don’t force me to wade through advertisement that I have stopped going to Poetry.com altogether.

Poetry.com is very good for people who like to write poetry and really want others to see it. As a resource for good poetry? Well, its like someone else said, a vanity site.

It's definitely a vanity publisher. You can send them ABC poems and you'll still get an email "Congratulations... you're one of our semi-finalists in the so and so poetry competition and you're invited to attend so and so conference in Washington". All contributors are "semi-finalists" or "the lucky 500" etc. It looks like their main purpose is to sell their anthologies of poems and it's really pricey too. In reality, poetry is about the last choice of a writing profession anyone would seriously embark on because there just isn't a market for it... unless you are someone like Maya Angelou.

It's like vanity printing- they'll publish almost anything if given money. It's a fun website though!
