Have you actually opened your burning software to see what it recognizes? Sometimes my Lite-On will say that it is a CD in the drive, when it is a DVD-R, but my burning programs recogize it as a 4.7 Gig DVD-R. I havn't had a problem with the burning either when my drive thinks it is a CD, it has burned DVDs fine.\
Hope that helps

Open Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device MAnager. Delete DVD device , reboot and let Windows reinstall the right drivers.
BTW, my Toshiba started doing the same thing right before the DVD writer failed.

Try going to the website of the manufacturer of your drive. They should have a "support" section there with downloads of the drivers for their various drives. Find yours, then download and install that driver. Good luck.
