A belly button appearance depends on how the umbilical cord mummifies. Immediately after a baby is delivered, the doctors place 2 clamps on the umbilical cord, one clamp close to where the umbilical cord enters the infant and another a few inches above it. Afterwards, the doctor cuts in between the 2 clamps. The umbilical cord, once separated from the placenta, will slowly degenerate very much like a leaf when separated from a twig. Without the nourishment from the placenta, it slows withers (a.k.a. mummifies) and falls off after 2 - 4 weeks. How the umbilical cord remnant separates from the abdominal determines the shape of the navel. The majority of the time it results in a "innie" belly button but a good percentage goes on to form an "outie." I have been involved in many many deliveries
See you have 6,000 points right now - was this your plan to reach that figure...regurgitate a couple of your past enquiries?

Ah, well, most of the previous answers apply - but my husband had always had an 'innie' and then discovered that he had an 'outie'. We took him to the doctor and it turned out that he had an umbilical hernia that needed surgical repair.
Doesn't matter if you have an 'outie' or an 'innie' - what matters is if it changes.

mine's an 'innie', but i've seen lots of 'outies', it's probably the way the cord was cut at birth

I have come to believe it depends on where your ambilical cord is cut and tied off, and the way it heals and then falls off, usually the closer it is cut to the body the more likely you are to have an innie

It's up to the doctor. They cut and snip your umbilical cord and make it either an outtie or an innie.
