Should I stay in and go for the much cheapness option or hit the town on New Year's Eve and bask in the joy of meeting and greeting random strangers?

Same as always. Avoid central London like a dose of the plague - I did it once, I'm in no hurry to repeat the experience- have a nice quiet in with the kids and go out onto the balcony at midnight to make lots of noise with party blowers and watch the fireworks. Oh, and don't forget the sparklers. Wouldn't be a proper new year without the sparklers!

Go out. You never know what's in store for you. You might, if you haven't already, meet the love of your life. Spend the beginning of the year, doing what you want to spend the year doing; having fun, working, etc
