It's a $3 cord that you can get at Radio Shack or just about anywhere that sells computer components. It runs from your audio output on your computer to your auxilliary input on your stereo. I have had my computer running thru my $150 stereo for years. I laugh at people who buy these $400 sound systems for their computers and have their stereo sitting right next to them.

Depends on which way you want to go, i.e. have the PC operate as a Music server, or have a direct play "link". As a music server, you will likely need some extra hardware, such as a unit that will actually transmit ( either wireless or by cable) to the stereo. The music server will allow you some control that a direct cabling will not, since some hardware available will have a remote available ... something like this http://axonix.com/
except maybe not so "high end".
The ultra basic solution is just have an audio out cable, and connect it to your Stereo... I found it works fine in a pinch; just keep the PC out volume low, since if your stereo has an in-line, then it will likely have a pre-amp as well.
So, the basic cable of PC to Stereo is el cheapo; however, the more advanced music server option has a myriad of possibilities, especially if you run Media Center edition of XP on your PC.
