Very briefly:

Watergate is actually the name of a hotel in Washington DC where certain individuals were caught going through the files and bugging the offices of the Democratic National Commitee. The scandal was later linked to increasingly higher officials in the Republican Party (through information given to two Washington Post journalists by a mysterious figure who called himself "Deep Throat"), finally reaching the top (Richard Nixon). Since Nixon had been engaged in criminal activities during his election, he was forced to resign from the presidency (or face impeachment and conviction in the Congress). Once his vice president Gerald Ford became president, he pardoned Nixon, thus keeping a president from serving prison time (he would have almost certainly been convicted).

As a side note, Deep Throat's identity has been revealed recently. Try looking him up on wikipedia (not the porno film) -- or the whole Watergate scandal for that matter.

In the beginning it appeared to be a burglary of the offices of the Democratic Party at the Watergate hotel. After some investigations , by congress and the Washington post, it became evident that the Committee to re-elect the President actively subverted the 1972 election. It was through pay offs, dirty tricks, enemies lists, leaks to the press, and shake downs that they were able to get re-elected. When the investigations started there was a cover up of the wrong doings. Evidence of taped recordings of conversations at the White house between Nixon and his advisers showed he obstructed justice. This led to his resignation.
Simply put, Nixon would do anything and everything to maintain his power both legal and illegal. Ultimately, that is how he lost it all.

Watergate was the infamous "break-in" at the Watergate hotel in Washington D.C. The republican president Nixon was rumored to have been part of planning a burglary against democratic rivals to get crucial information.

Nixon was rumored to have played a large part in the planning and some proof was recorded on the Nixon tapes.

There are some really good articles on the net about watergate. Just be sure to find a "newsworthy, non biased" article.

"Watergate" was about a break-in at the Democrat National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Wash. DC back in 1972, before the Nixon re-election. It turned out that it was carried out by many members of Nixon's administration...and through exhaustive investigation by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post, it was finally discovered that knowledge of the break-in went all the way up to Nixon himself....resulting in his resignation on 8/9/1974. Ford got a lot of flack for pardoning Nixon in Sept. 1974.

In a nutshell: Watergate was the name of a hotel in DC where the Democratic Headquarters Offices were located. Sometime in the early 70's their offices were broken into and burglarized and it was later found to be some of Nixon's people who orchestrated and carried out the plan. Many of them served prison sentences. Nixon was facing criminal investigations and possible prison time himself. When Ford took office, one thing he did right off was to pardon Nixon. This did not set well with many Americans and therefore, pretty much cost him being elected in 1976.

The Commitee to Re-elect president Nixon broke into the other team's office to try and gain advantage in the upcoming election and got caught. Turned out everyone in Nixon's administration was in on it, including Nixon. That's it.
