I fed my mother's horse a big mac and pizza I had left in my car over night and she seemed to love it. I just gave her a whopper from burger king after a long ride and she loved it!. I noticed that she seems to have horrible bowel movements and trouble breathing afterwards but it seems to go away after a few hours. Is it ok on occasion?

No it isn't! Horses have very sensitive digestive systems and when disturbed they can colic which is deathly. Also, horses aren't meat eaters, so don't feed them meat. If you want to feed them something special then carrots, apples or special horse treats you can either make yourself of buy.

As a treat, a fry or piece of bread shouldn't hurt but horses are not meat eaters and cannot digest meat. This could end up in colic and the horse COULD die. What do you mean by horrible bowel movements? Diarrhea?
I'd stick to apples and carrots and leave the leftover fast food to the dogs and cats.

Horses are not made to eat meat, so the answer is no. On another note, ON OCCASION it is okay to give them a little people food sometimes. My horse loves french fries and mountain dew so she gets it on occasion. some healthy treats to give your horse are, carrots, apples, horse treats (bought at a horsey store like a tack shop) sugar cubes, grapes, and bananas. These should still all be given in small portions. Also, if you live where it is hot, Gatorade is very good for horses, it keeps them hydrated, this may sound crazy but my vet recommended it and the horses loved it! Red was their favorite. I hope this helps!

Most horses tolerate fast food on occassion even though I don't recommend it, but it sounds like your horse has an allergy to the fast food and so I wouldn't feed her anymore of the fast food. The troubled breathing can possibly as well as easily turn into a horse fatality.

ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING! You don't feed a horse fast food! If that's not good for us then it must be worse for a horse! If you say she has trouble breathing afterwards then HOW could you be stupid enough to try to feed that to her again! I love horses and I think that what you are doing is VERY bad for that horse! Do NOT feed that horse any more fast food, they make horse food for a reason!

Have you ever known someone who was lactose-intolerant, but they STILL ate milk products cuz they loved it so much? The milk is bad for them, but they still eat it, cuz its yummy! That doesnt mean they shouldn't try to avoid it.....

While there is information on the web stating that if the meat is safe for human consumption, its probably safe for horses... i beleive there are two reasons your horse may be having difficulty with the food.
1)The horse is not accustomed to meat... Horses are known to eat dead animals they find while grazing, and... In other countries horses are fed meat-broth and flesh of sheep, but your horse has been used to eating hay and oats and grazing in the grass etc. Introducing a new and VERY different form of food to her is probably what made her sick.
2) if meat IS ok for your horse, (once she gets accustomed to it) you ARE feeding her fat-soaked, greasy, non-nutritious food. Its may be ok once in a while, but the food can't supply the nutrients your horse needs to be healthy...

I suggest trying to feed her first, then giving her a small portion if she likes it so much, as an occasional treat only. Very occasional.
Many babies LOVE all sorts of food they shouldn't have, and when you feed it to them they get diarrhea, so you let their digestive systems develope and get accustomed to the food before giving it to them on a regular basis. I hope that puts things into perspective for you... you don't want to get your horse sick, do you? But occasional treats are ok, just like if you were taking care of a child.

I can see our temtation for giving fast food to our animals. They don't really know it exists, so they can do without it. It is bad for them, just like it is bad for us. On occasion, I think it would be OK. But if it hurts her, you might want to give her carrots or an apple instead when you want to give her a treat. If it is making her have breathing problems, I wouldn't give her anymore fast food, it could turn serious. That sounds like an allergic reaction anyways.

horses do not have the digestive track to eat meat...or the proper teeth. if a little piece gets in their system it wont kill them but any kind of meat can make them very sick and since horses are unable to vomit you may end up with a large vet bill. but if you were going to give them some french toast sticks from Carl's Jr. then you are fine. mine love them dipped in syrup!
