Sounds like the drain is partially plugged. The blockage is between the washing machine's drain and the sewer in the street. More than likely, it is much closer to the drain than to the street.

Is there a "cleanout" plug in the floor? If not, is there one in the large vertical pipe that is the main drain in the house? That vertical pipe is black metal in older houses and white plastic in newer ones.

If there is a cleanout, try running a plumber's "snake" through it. You might have to go both directions to find the blockage. This is an EXTREMELY dirty job, extremely.

You can try chemical drain cleaners. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. Sometimes a plunger can help, but I doubt it in your case. Do NOT use the plunger after you use chemicals, it is dangerous.

Sometimes these blockages go away by themselves, but usually the get worse. Sometimes they get much worse and sometimes it happens very quickly.

Personally, I would not ignore it, but would work on it immediately.

Plugged line, or your vent on the drain line isn't working properly.
Try snaking out the line first. If that doesn't help, then check your vent pipe, usually on the roof should be about inch and a half to two inches around and sticks out of the roof about a foot high.
