Do a time capsule that you and she can open when she's older to remember this New Year's Eve. Include pics of her and yourself and this past year's fun and and any lifechanging event's that occurred. Make a dessert also. That will take up some time. Don't make it to early or you might get sleepy. Good luck! '-)

This is the year to start a family tradition.
My sons & I always eat crab legs out on the patio for dinner on New Year's Eve and then shoot off those over-the-counter fireworks that you can buy at Target, Big Lots, et al. [Call your neighbors earlier in the day if you're going to do this!] I also hang the lights from the Christmas tree all around the family room to give it a festive mood.
How about some arts & crafts? You could make party hats/crowns and take pictures of yourselves wearing them. And definitely do dress-up. [Maybe after you're done with the crafts.]
The "Year-in-Review" ideas are terrific, too. And then every year you can do it again and also look back over past year's memories.
Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy the time with your daughter. Before you know it, she'll be anywhere-in-the-world but at home with Mom on New Year's Eve.

Many churches have organized events on new years eve. If you were thinking of staying in, you could bake together, play board games or even do traditional sleepover things like style one anothers hair and put makeup on one another. Another option is to visit Blockbuster and the grocery to stock up on those movies you haven't had time to watch and special snacks. Buy a bottle of sparkling wine juice and a couple of glasses at the local dollar store to toast in the new year. Be sure to snap some pictures and preserve the memories.

I like the idea of sharing past stories with her about your family, her family. I think it would be great if you could make them not about what you got or what you got someone else....but make it a point to bring out old family photos and find something good to say about all her relatives,,,(even if some have to be "modified" alittle. It will give her a sense of self, a good sense of self, to know she came from some very good and caring people.
Let her know how much you love her.
Let HER do something nice for YOU!!!! She will feel what it feels like to be that good person and to how nice is it to give as opposed to recieving....
all the ideas here are great, but I honestly think that learning more about who she is, by hearing about selfless acts some of her relatives, even ones she didn't know have done. Eight is not too early to teach the beauty of giving....find a little job for her and then praise her for it....good luck and happy new year to you both

Have a picnic in front of the fireplace
Ask her to teach you to dance
Play a game
Prepare a treasure hunt with clues
Treat her like a queen... dress as a waiter and serve her a fancy dinner... make sure she dresses for the occasion
Watch a really good movie that she'll like
Teach her to dance
Ask her what she would like to do
Go ice skating after supper
Go for a walk after supper
Read her a story
Invent a story together
Talk to her about her life
Happy New Year!

Do you have some board games to play? (Like Scrabble or a trivia game?) Card games maybe?

You could make cookies- maybe some sugar cookies and get some cookie cutters- like a snowman or trumpet to sound in the New Year.

I don't think there is much to watch on tv- unless you rent some videos or dvds you like.

Happy New Year!
