the weather will probably be foggy and cold so bring some warm clothing.
you should definitely visit the golden gate and the golden gate park. they may seem cliche but it's a truly breathtaking sight. also, go to fisherman's wharf to sample some of the best and freshest seafood in the nation. it might be a little crowded but since you're travelling in january, it should be ok. also, pier 31 is a major attraction even for the local youth here. chinatown is great for cheap, authentic, and REALLY TASTY food. you can get a 2 trays of dim sum for about $7.50. no joke, i tried that once. also, the exploratorium is a fun attraction. it's a museum that boasts some of the weirdest, oddest, and most encapturing things about science a person could ever hope to learn. best thing about that, it's right next to the palace of fine arts which is a real pleasant and worthwhile trip too. you should buy a small loaf of bread to feed to the ducks or swans in the pond there. It's really romantic or fun for the kids, whichever you're travelling with. really good sushi would absolutely be found in japantown. it's the cutest little neighborhood and looks exactly like a little piece of japan. everything's authentic, so no need to worry about the flavor.
i hope these tips will help you on your visit to SF. have a safe trip!

January is the coldest month. Rain could arrive everyday. Be prepared.
Must see places are Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf,
Golden Gate Park, Union Square (Downtown), Chinatown, Pacific Heights, Haight Street, Union Street and North Beach.
Good Restaurants are Ebisu Japanese Restaurant. Fun place is
Sushi Rock, Farrallon, Chaya Brassiere, Chez Papa, Crepevine and Max's Opera Cafe.
There are NO outlet malls in SF. The malls are regular shopping malls.Stonestown Galleria, Market Street Center and Westfield's Shopping Center.
Outside of SF are Serramonte Shopping Mall, Petaluma Outlet Stores Shopping Mall and Nut Tree Outlet Malls in Vallejo.

January is cold and wet, just like in most U.S. cities.
Everyone sees the Golden Gate Bridge, of course. It is one of the enduring symbols of America (besides being an engineering triumph, the bridge is also built over a much older fort that was the first sight of the U.S. mainland for Asian newcomers).
It would also be silly to leave San Francisco without touring the two palace museums (Fine Arts and Legion of Honor), Alcatraz prison, Grace Cathedral, Asian Art Museum, Golden Gate Park, North Beach, Chinatown, Berkeley University (or Stanford University, depending on your politics), Muir Woods, and Wine Country. Further afield is Yosemite National Park and beach towns Santa Cruz/Monterey. But it is only realistic to visit those if you're in San Francisco for more than a week.
San Francisco is one of the world's great restaurant cities. And the place is pretty much obsessed with sushi. Ebisu, Hotei, Blowfish Sushi, Kabuto, and Kyo-ya are generally the most well regarded by critics, but everyone seems to have a different favorite.
Most downtown San Francisco shopping is either high-end boutiques or touristy junk. There's very little in between the extremes. You'll have to go to the suburbs to find a genuine outlet mall (the Great Mall of the Bay Area in Milpitas, Napa Factory Stores, Factory Stores Of America At Nut Tree in Vacaville). However, you might be able to find some bargains on clothes in residential neighborhoods like Noe Valley or the 24th street corridor.

Be prepared for weather changes. It could be cold and foggy, or sunny but cold or raining. The weather varies all year long in SF. The must see places I would say are Fisherman's wharf, union square for lots of shopping, alcatraz and the golden gate bridge. For outlet malls you would have to drive about an hour and a half from SF to Gilroy for the best outlet mall out there. Good luck and have fun!

It's wet here in mid-January, but the temperature is quite mild. I'd don't know what interests you, but I 'd recommend avoiding the tourist traps like Fisherman's Wharf. SF has some great neighborhoods, though, such as Haight- Ashbury, the Mission Dictrict and the Castro. The cable cars are fun. Muir Woods in Marin County is beautiful, as is the Wine Country. The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose has got to be seen to be believed. There's lots of great restaurants, especially Asian ones. Mid-January is a good time to come here, as there aren't too many visitors.

There is a lot to do in SF but I would recommend the following:
Call the Golden Fleet and purchase tickets to visit Alcatraz. Eat and Bubba Gump located in Pier 39. The malls are located in downtown SF so you will not miss them even if you tried. Visit China Town, just take a taxi. If you have time take the BART over to Berkeley and visit the university and then have a hot dog at "TOP DOG" a local place to have a dog when you are in town.
Hope this helps.

If she lives in San Francisco, she will know plenty of places to take you. Alcatraz, Nob Hill, Fisherman's Wharf, Telegraph Hill, Golden Gate Park, The Fillmore, the Museum of Modern Art, etc. Mount Diablo is a mountain about 60 miles east of the city that is over 5,000 feet tall, and has a wonderful view.

Best sushi in SF is hands down Zushi Puzzle on Lomard in the Marina. Call ahead though hard to get in a lot of times. It doesn't look fancy smancy just great sushi and reasonable prices.
