A harem is usally a herd of females (mare), but its rare to have all mares and no stallion(s).

A group of horses is called a herd.

Bachelor herds refer to gatherings of juvenile male horses who are still sexually immature, who have been thrown out of their parent groups but not yet formed a new family group.

A group of horses is referred to as a herd--it doesn't neccessarily have to be just mares (females). If it is a group of mares that are pregnant or with their foals (babies) it is called a broodmare band.
