Your mouse pointer moving on it own is not good. If you mouse itself is moving that is another story. Just a ghost don't worry. heheh. Seriously you should run your anti-virus and spyware programs. Below is what I would run.
Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.
Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
If the above scans come back clean, I would also run Hijackthis.
Download HijackThis---http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php#hijackthis. Run and Save a Log. When you log comes up copy and paste the entire log at http://www.hijackthis.de/ . Analyze your results. You will then get a screen that will tell you if you have any nasty stuff in your computer. Follow instructions to deal with any nasties. CAUTION: This is a very powerful tool. Be careful.

If your computer does things it is not supposed to. You might need to clean your mouse if it has a ball. Get a new mouse and scan your computer for intruders. If no one broke into your computer then defragment your disk and run disk check. The last thing to do before you format your disk is to reinstall the OS.
After all of this, your computer should work fine.
I would suggest getting a new mouse though. It is more likely a system error.

If you are using an optical mouse, the one with red light coming from the bottom of the mouse, then you should not keep it on any glossy or shiny surface. Most suitabley use a piece of cloth under it so as to stop the automatic cursor movement

Sometimes you can, sometime you CANT!!
Most times you can though. Depends on how they do it.
Most times, your mouse will move involuntarily. If this happens, turn your pc off immediately with the power button before something bad happens.
