If I start my Computer, I will have to wait about 5 minutes before I can start using the Internet, or any other program. Is there anything I can do to speed it up (my computer knowledge is limited), or would it be better to ask for professional help?

Here are some basic quick tips:

If your computer is a laptop, plug it in the mains, as they tend to run quicker than if by just using battery.

Look in the start menu: All programs -> startup
You may have a lot of programs listed here which all load up when the computer starts. Delete as many from here as possible and your computer should load quicker.

More advanced:
Get the Run command up and type "msconfig", then when the box pops up, click on the "Startup" tab. Here is a list of startup items, some you will need and others you won't (e.g. usually you'll have realtime, quicktime, adobe, windows messanger, itunes, printer things etc. that you won't necessarily need to start up straight away). Use this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ to type in the program names and help you see if you should delete a program. If in doubt, don't delete it from the startup menu. Then restart your computer and it should load quicker.
(Note: don't muck around with the other tabs as if you don't know what you're doing you'll break things).

Download this free and safe program, called Advanced Windows Care. Maybe you also got too many programs starting up at the same time. To find out if you need all these programs, click on Start and choose Run (it's way over there on the menu). In the white block type in msconfig A block will pop up, now choose the start up tab, maybe you have allot of unnecessary programs running in your Systems tray, like Real Audio, Quick Time, etc, they all use up resources. Uncheck the ones in the Start Up tab you don't use. Also you might have little hard drive space, to clean out the clutter safely, download this free and safe program, called CCleaner. Best of luck, chow.

Either you have too many programs opening automatically (lower right tool bar) or you have a diagnostic program that's taking all the processing time till it's finished. That can be corrected by reallocating processor time, giving priority to the keyboard. Get a knowledgeable person to help you out.

Check for Viruses and stuff often these can slow down a PC.
Also you might want to defragment your pc. Over time your files get all messed up and can also slow your pc down. My favourite Defrag tool is Perfectdisk http://www.raxco.com/ can get a 30 day trial. Or you can just use the defrag tool in XP but it not as good as perfect disc http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848
Also you can disable programs from starting up at boot time that are not needed. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx

The best thing is to reboot your whole computer, and yes, you would loose all your files. 2nd, try deleting programs you don't need, and 3rd, defragment you drives by going to My Computer>Right click on hard drive, click properties, Click the "Tools" tab, and press defragment.
