Using a standard, cheap microphone that came with a PC, plugged into the microphone socket. It records sound, but very quietly. Would it record sound better if a better microphone was used?

You should just be able to turn the volume up
In Windows XP
Go to Start - Control Panel
Click on Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices, then Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the Audio tab, then Click the Volume button under the Sound Recording section. Crank the volume up on the Microphone Slider.

Click on the start menu at the bottom....system....sound devices..check your input and output volume settings first...from here you can control any sound devices you have including speakers, you may need to just do a check of all sound devices to check output volumes of the speakers also.
