Some programs unfortunatly require I run IE to view them. But IE is a problem. I've upgraded to IE 7.0 and downloaded Java Runtime, but when I open i open IE, it eventually locks up and I can't determined why. Also It always asks for a error report to be sent to the gods at Microsoft, why can't they correct it??? I wish everything would just run on Firefox it would make life simple and happy.

yes this is definatly a problem with IE7 It locks up repeatedly and I have sent error reports to Microsoft. I called Microsoft but after 30 minutes of holding, I was quite tired and hung up. The question would probably be resolved if I take IE out altogether. I loaded the IE for Firefox (thanks to all who told me about this - didnt know it existed) but have not been able figure out how to use it yet.

Yes, you can run IE, Firefox and other browsers at the same time. Why Microsoft cannot correct problems before sending out a browser, maybe someone else knows. Best of luck.

Yes and the best set up for this is to run Firefox as your default browser but add the extension called IETab which will allow you to run in IE with the click of the mouse for those poorly coded web pages that work only in IE.

You can run both Firefox and IE7 (and other browsers) concurrently.

The BETTER solution to your problem is to take an active effort in reporting the problems you experience, so that both browsers improve.

To report bugs with IE7 (you say it locks up)...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx
or phone them at 866-234-6020

To report bugs with Firefox (you say some sites don't run)...

What is the error message IE7 displays? I may be able to help.

They do run OK side by side - I've tested this across 20+ machines and users.

FYI FireFox isn't so perfect and has been patched for memory leaks and other bugs recently :-( .

Side by side, they can slow your system if you have less than 512MB of RAM from experience.

This plugin may help with FireFox and IE7-only pages:

Yes they can run at the same time smoothly. But you can clear the IE7 upgrade mess by doing a clean installation of windows.

It sounds like you have a buggy I.E. 7 on your hands.
Your computer can run both browsers at the same time because they are seperate programs and should not be using shared files under XP.
You could try unloading I.E. 7 and reinstalling it to see if it works

For pages not webstandard compliant that do not work properly in superior browsers (Firefox or Opera) you can use a Firefox extension called IE tab
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/

Try the webstandards compliant test
