I'm guessing but maybe since the original copier when the copy frenzy revolution came about was made by Xerox. People associated facsimiles with likeness or the same or a "copy". It also killed 2 birds with one stone by shortening the word it was more office friendly and they through in the "X" from Xerox or copier. I have heard people ask for a Xerox instead of asking for a copy of something. Like I said just a guess...but that's what I always thought when I have heard it in the past....Good question by the way.
