There is no evidence of any kind that "the end of our society is in 25-30 years." I hope you're not talking about some kind of religious prophecy -- first, this is SCIENCE, not superstition...and second, religious nuts have been predicting the end of the world for thousands of years, yet here we still are :)
We spend the money to go to Mars because we know FOR CERTAIN that at some point we will have to leave this earth and find another place to live if the human race is going to survive. We've got a few billion years probably (when our sun is going to go red giant), but a big errant asteroid or comet could do us in sooner. It's prudent to insure the survival of our species by gaining the knowledge we'll need to move to another planet, and we start that process by doing small local trips like Mars. It would also relieve a great deal of pressure on this planet if we could truly make Mars a colony, and have an option to live there.

The reason they even started investigating Mars is because they had planned to make it suitable for human life so that there is someplace to go if and when human life is no longer possible on Earth.
The original purpose of the bio-dome project was to see if people could live in an artificial environment, because they wanted to build one on Mars.
Searching for water on Mars is another key to the human race being able to migrate there.
So if you really believe that the end of society is within 25-30 years, you should be even more excited about Mars exploration than others who are more realistic.
I've heard it said that the Earths oil supply could run out in that amount of time, but that has nothing to do with society ending.
That will probably just mean the price of solar panels is going to skyrocket.

Well it is not proven that mankind will end in 25-30 years and its tough to say that it wont happen but if we do find water on mars we could introduce simple bacteria and other organisms and slowly introduce more water grass trees and mars will be able to sustain an atmosphere and the end result is human life. This of course would take much much longer than 25-30 years and trillions of dollars. We also want to research mars to see if it did once support life and if it did it may be the model of earth when it does get hit buy an asteroid or gamma ray burst.Ultimately do not believe everything you see on the discovery channel but keep it in mind and try to live your life as peaceful as u can.

Why do you believe that society is going to end in 25-30 years? Most people do not share that belief. Even if they did could you really say you would stop doing everything on a hypothetical belief that the world will end. People will continue to raise children and prepare for the future as though there is not any end in sight because if we didn't the worry and anxiety over what could amount to nothing would be disastorous.

For the same reason we are wasting money on professional football. Because it is what people do to live and not just survive.
And our society will NOT end in 30 years, unless all the people just give up on it. If everyone gives up on going to Mars, climbing mountains, inventing HDTV, and playing football, and they just get the food they need and forget everything else, then we would be doomed.

Who says the society will end in 25-30 years? There have been many such pessimistic prophesies several times earlier. None have come true. Space technology is the future savior of mankind. Progress is must on this front.

I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETELY.
Let's just burn the money instead.
We could all show our position against further squandering of
our money by each of us burning ten One Hundred Dollar Bills.
That would really show those big wigs in Washington.
Lets begin tonight. Don't wait for someone else to start the movement. Do your thing right now. Be sure and tell all
of your friends and associates what you are going to do.
Get them to join you on this momentous occasion.

i'm 40-one yep i trust you, there became greater appreciate for human beings and components then, there became this variety of element as self-discipline. political correctness became basically some fool's thought of the thank you to justify his existence and so became wellbeing and risk-free practices! we had greater freedom and much greater relaxing, yet we had appreciate for others! the yob subculture is in all threat because of the doogooders in Whitehall returned then banning punishment and self-discipline in faculties and residences, so now the little fckrs can get away with beating up and raping instructors and anybody else they desire with out having to go through the outcomes! if basically the doogooders could be made to respond to for all their stupid concepts and judgements!

Please prove your assertation that society is going to end in 25-30 years. If it's based on the bible, I'm not going to further justify the space program to you; you wouldn't understand it anyway.

You can't stop living today because of something that may or may not happen in the distant future.
That's like saying: "Why bother going to work today since I'm just going to die someday in the future anyway"?
Not logical.
