They had to be somewhere near a fresh water source, such as a river or lake, because they didn't have irrigation, or sewage systems or anything, and (obviously) water is necessary for any animals to survive.
Also somewhere with soil (meaning, not a solid rock area) to be able to grow their food, not only to eat, but so their livestock could graze.
It was a good idea to be on a higher plane than the surrounding areas, because they could watch out for Native American ambushes or any trouble that might be heading their way.
And if possible they preferred to be near the ocean as well. This was so they could be near a port, since most of their resources that weren't readily available in America, were shipped over from England, or Europe.

umm...that's all I can think of.

Hope it helped! Good luck with the homework!

They needed a place near the water, so they could catch food to eat, drink from it, and maybe even sail their ships when they were ready to go back to their country. Also, they looked for civilizations that they could trade with because they wanted to make money. They also looked for rich resources, such as gold, or any kind of precious stone/mineral. The colonists also looked for wood so they could make fires and in the case of Jamestown, they used wood they chopped down to make a wooden city wall.

Hope this helps!
