Unless you're a tourist and want to do that only "once is enough in a lifetime" Times Square thing, you may want to consider downtown NYC, especially east village but that also depends on your budget. If you're looking for a "lively" time and since you are in Stamford you may want to think about South Norwalk which can be awesome or even places like g/r/a/n/d or Dragonfly in Stamford downtown. But beware, do not drink or do not drive as the highly competent, no-tolerance, Stamford Police usually waits outside and at major intersections for those, seemingly, far too enubriated. Cheers.
