Pizicato, you are wrong about Hockey. In fact more times than not there are 2 assists awarded on goals. They count the last 2 passes.

It's only in basketball that they only count that last pass. In order to get credit for an assist in basketball the person scoring has to put the ball through the hoop without putting the ball on the floor. If the person receives the pass then dribbles and shoots there is no assist.

An "assist" in basketball is when one player passes the ball to another player who then makes a basket. The pass from the first player directly contributed to the action of making a basket by the second player. The basket needs to be made within 3 seconds of the pass. (John Stockton of the Utah Jazz was the best ever at doing this.)

In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads to a score by field goal, meaning that he or she was "assisting" in the basket.
Unlike other sports like ice hockey, an assist only counts for the pass directly before the score, and so only one assist can be recorded on each field goal. A pass that leads to a shooting foul and scoring by free throws does not count as an assist.

An assist is when your teammate passess the ball to you and you just shoot the ball. Also a assist is when someone passes to you for an alleyoop and it's successful(if you dunk it in the basket or just do a layup and the ball going inside the basket). Also another kind of alleyoop is when your teammate passes to you and your going to the basket for a fast break.
