As a professional Makeup Artist I would have to say that lemon is said to help lighten the skin. I have freckles and I tried to get rid of them with lemon but it doesn't work. It will lighten the skin 1/2 a tone but nothing drastic.
To lighten spots try Peter Thomas Roth Lightening Gel, MSRP $55. It's sold at Sephora, Nordstroms and Bath & Body Works.

If you put lemon juice on a zit, it will dry it out and in a sense help clear it up. It will probably make your skin bleed as well, b/c it's a harsh acid for your skin. Yes, it does work, but is it the best alternative? Probably not. If you're looking for cheap, around-the-house ideas to clear up a zit, try toothpaste. Surprisingly, toothpaste (w/ baking soda) clears up zits if you leave it on there for a little while. Hope this helps!

lemon is a wonderful natural cleanser. it cleanses without disturbing the natural acid mantle of the skin . it is also a natural astringent and helps to tighten the skin. it is very refreshing. Lemon is most versatile and has been including in face creams, and cleanswers and masks! so you can say it works good by cleansing but i'm not sure of the spots part!

I've heard that, but be careful, because the acidity of the juice may make them even darker or just irritate your skin real bad
