Religious discrimination in Europe during that period. It followed the 30 years war and the English religious civil wars, and people needed to find a place they could be free to worship and land to own.

There was a large influx of people arriving from Europe during this period and the people that arrived in the colonies survived at a larger percentage then in the previous years due to less conflicts with Indians and not having to start completely from scratch.

Joe Willy Neckbone says, " religious freedom and immigration are the main reasons for population growth during this time period. People that migrated to the New World sought the freedom to practice the religion of their choice instead of being forced to practice the religion of their former government."

" This, in no way, should be misconstrued to validate illegal immigration as there were no laws to govern immigration during this time period. There are laws now and illegal immigrants blatantly violate these laws making them common criminals."
