Thre are four factors ... you named three..
1 and 2) Power an size (amperage and voltage should match. Your computer will have these numbers on the case somewhere (usually near the plug) if not check the manual. Transformers will almost always have it printed or embossed on the housing somewhere. Most computers can tolerate a small variation in voltage but you should get the two to match
3) Size: Not all plugs are the same size or shape. Round plugs may be the same on the outside but the innner shaft may be smaller or larger. Try them out with the computer off and the transformer unplugged.
4) After you find a plug that fits with a transformer the right size, check the polarity. Pay special attention to the round plugs. The outside of the plug and the inner shaft are + and - in some way. You will need to match that of the computer. Here you have an option. If you have matched 1 to 3, and the polarity is reversed, you simply cut the cord and reverse the wires (reinsuating them of course) and it will work. Some computers are protected aganst reversed polarity some aren't. It would be an expensive lesson to learn.
thats it... good luck

laptop power adaptors are tricky buiseness
> best get replacement from manufacturer
input voltage rating 100 - 250 volts ac
output voltage > a fixed constant volts dc
18 v dc or 19.5 v dc, irrespective of input voltage
thats not all, mate ... the power adaptor powers u'r laptop + charges u'r batteries
battery charging can be tricky business too, auto-cutoff switch monitors battery charge & accordingly delivers power to batteries > full charge or boost charge, trickle charge or no charge., depending upon battery charge levels
pin conficuration is also typical of each make & loose connections can cause a lot of damage
so, decide 4 self > only other reliable source i know of is targus, who tailor make u'r adaptor to suit u'r make / model !

sure not an area to play around with volts & amps
lottsa other parameters like mili ampere hours ... besides the cut-off switch mechanism & it's parameters / units
