I always feel annoyed at book sales when books are divided into male or female interest books. Years ago science fiction was held to be a male domain. Female writers in the genre used masculine pen-names or ambiguous names such as Andre Norton. The readership was also supposed to be mainly male. Then the fen (SF term for fans) started holding large cons (conventions) and it became obvious there was a large feminine contingent and many enjoyed the hard science stories as much as the fantasy ones.

Incidentally the only other genre I know that has a large organised fandom is romance.

I think any differences between men and women are more cultural than real. Certainly you cannot tell the gender of an author by reading their book. I know many people were astonished to learn that Julian May is female.

I guss that the question should be Are men more influenced or affected by romance novels as much as women are?
Because I think that both read romance novels but the difference between men and women is in being influenced by it.

I'm sure some do, though most of those "some" will likely not admit it.

I myself am not a big fan of romance novels, but give me a crime thriller or a fantasy book any day!

I don't know about Harlequins and such, but I know that there are many Westerns that are actually thinly disguised masculine romance/soft porn. Since most romance novels are soft-core porn for women, I think that equals it out.

Haha, if she would dump you over that, then you're not ready for marriage. Would I marry a man who read that crap? Oh sure, but I'd expect him to have a sense of humor about it and I'd tease the hell out of him every time I saw him reading something so awful.

believe it or not alot of men do. They just arent open to telling people tht they read them. Some men do it because they want to see what women get so excited about and then they end up getting hooked.

Men who write them do that to make money off females and the femme-males.
Romance novels for men are Penthouse Letters.

No, because, basically, romance novels are porno for women - and us men like our sexual fantasies with pictures.

i do believe they read it...i know men and women are different but we all have the same common denominator--we are humans....of course they read it and of course they also get affected by it --- some men are just too shy to admit it because they think they would lose percentage of their manhood.....
