i just set up my tank, ran it empty for a few days and then went and got the fish. On friday i got 6 fancy guppies, and then got 6 more plus a pletc. on saturday. I noticed sunday morning that the room where the tank is stinks really bad! i checked the filter and tank for dead fish...nothing! They all seem to be acting normal and none are discolored. Why does it stink so bad? Ohh, and its not a small tank.

Well, it depends.
It sounds like you have a fresh water tank, and most of those need to be cycled.( Just like the salt water) If you checked the PH and Sulfur levels and its still smelly, I would jsut assume its your fish that are getting used to the water. They have a very high bacterial rate to them, and when mixed with algae they stink.
Don't worry about the smell if your levels are okay. If you haven't checked your levels, then I would it sounds like the acidic sulfur thats making a foul smell.
Good luck!

Plecos poop a lot and grow big. They are not good fish for a tank under 150 gal.

You may have put too many fish in the tank too soon. Do a 30% water change each day for the next few days and always make shure that there is no left over food after 30 sec. Left over food is normally what causes a smelly tank, it can kill the fish too.

Water changes should be done once a week but you can do it more often if necessary, as in the case of a smelly tank.

Check the chemical levels
Nitrates
Nitrites
PH
Ammonia
Alkalinity
You can get a all in one test kit from the pet store for about $25 and they are easy to use and work great.

Smell in water is usually caused by an imbalance of chemicals, usually high ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites.

If you have live plants, the dead plant matter and other decomposing organic matter makes the nitrites very high which causes smell water.

This is a serious problem and will slowly poison and kill your fish so you should act fast because sometime, ammonia poisoning is irresverible at a certain point.

Running a tank empty for a few days does not cycle it, it takes three or four weeks to completely cycle a tank. Even "seeding" it with a used filter or sponge, it still takes a week. That said, even if the tank completed a fishless cycle, you added 13 fish in two days! They need to be added gradually so the good bacteria isn't overwhelmed with wastes. Three fish per week is a good way to add them, with the hardiest fish first. Patience is a requirement for keeping fish!

your tank stinks because it needs cleaning. and you shouldn't have added so many fish in one week. Fish should be added a few at a time over the course of like a month or something.

so buy a syphoning thingy (preferably the kind that hook up the your sink) and clean the darn things gravel. Im guessing your tank is bigger than 10 gallons since you added quite a lot of fish.

happy cleaning!
