Self-sufficiency is nothing to be ashamed of. Like others have said or implied, too much either way is a turn-off. There should be a balance in the relationship where each member compliments the other and together you make a whole. This is just our opinion and others people are entitled to theirs.

This is a difficult question because the answer changes over time. Different guys will be attracted to different girls based on the level of independence of that girl. Some guys like to play the role of the knight in shining armor coming to save the day. However, this role gets old fast if the girl abuses it.

Some guys like independent girls because the girls are confident and don't need to be emotionally supported by the guy. However, over time, the guy and the girl are supposed to become more dependent on each other until they fall in love and can't see themselves living without the other. So, the independent girl is supposed to become dependent on the guy (and vice versa) to achieve a stable committed relationship. When this works, it is called true love.

In the middle of all this is r-e-s-p-e-c-t. Whether a girl is independent or not, no guy enjoys being mocked, ridiculed, or pitied by a girl. This is often referred to as being a b***h. So, being independent should lead to cool confidence, not smug arrogance. This is equally true for men as it is for women.

A man that is intimidated by a girl that has some mechanical skills is not worth much. It only demonstrates his own inadequacies as a man. I have taught several classes to women called Tool Time for Women and it was one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taught. We changed tires, ran a saw, soldered a pipe, etc. Some were married, others were not, but all in all they learned something new.

I enjoy being around a woman that is more independent.
I have always shown ladies that want to learn something I know, how to do it so they can take care of the problem if the need should arise. Especially in the automotive repair section.

I am in the apartment industry and there are a lot of women that are buying a house or moving into a house and want to know how things work in case they are in that same situation when they move and I gladly show them anything they want to learn.

Just like on this web sight.

Yes some, and I emphasize some men get very intimidated by a women that can perform tasks such as mechanic work.& home repair better than them. And don't even think about winning in a game off sports. I think it's due to a lack of security in them self's. My self being a man of 46 I think it's wonderful when a woman is better than me in things,no matter what it is,that way there is little that we can't do together.

Way too many people are unwilling to admit their lack of knowlege on ANY subject. Sometimes those people are intimidated by those who do know what they are talking about. More often, they are just plain nasty because they don't want to be shown as fakes.

I love to talk to those who know more about something than I do because I can learn from them. Unfortunately, those people are few and far between.

Okay, just kidding in the last sentence. Hope you found it funny, I'm not really that arrogent.

Even those who know less theory about a subject, but have more practical knowlege can often give me helpful ideas.

In short, if the guy can't take it, you need a better guy.

There is also a tremendous difference between stupid and having a lack of knowlege. Stupid can not learn, lack of knowlege only needs to learn to solve his/her problem.

I have no problem with lack of knowlege, unless they are too lazy to learn by themselves. I don't do stupid, it is too frustrating.

It is perfect to be independent and academically prepared much better for a lady; but you cannot trade feminity with independence.

Yes, men are intimidated with independent girls because it happens to be, that women today, are very conscious of being the best in everything and they feel surrogated.

If you are what you said to be, please try to look for an independent minded man in order to more or less cope with life easily.

Don't tell your male friends of your many atributes. Be wise and let them find out slowly.

As a gal myself, sad to say, i feel that men prefer women who don't know as much as them or women who are stupider than them just so that they can appear to be more 'MaN' in front of others. however, when u ask a man this question, he'll most likely tell u that he prefer an independent woman who can take care of herself and appear confidence. tried and tested myself. this is so irritating. Prob this is an ego thing.

I was in that same boat but I have learned from my husband that if I am not happy with the way something is done or not done then ultimatley he'd rather know and have me stick up for myself. I am not a pushy person but I do know how to communicate. Don't be afraid to be yourself. When you are happy they are happy. I guess it goes with "If momma ain't happy, ain't noone happy" I hope that helps
