wow...Ponyboy is the name of the main character from the book "The Outsiders" by SE Hinton (not sure SE is the right initials)...
in the book someone that was very near to him dies...right before he dies he says "stay gold ponyboy, stay gold".
i don't know how that line got into a song....
but it's definitely in that book...
"stay gold ponyboy, stay gold" means to stay innocent...ponyboy was in a gang, but he was too young and innocent...
the person that was dying is telling him to stay innocent.

It's a quote from the movie 'The Outsiders'. Ponyboy was a character in the film, and the stay gold reference is from a Robert Frost poem, and was Ponyboys favourite poem, I think.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leafs a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

That line is from the book "The Outsider's" by S.E. Hinton. In the book Ponyboy is a good kid/young man that has very little money -- he's a "rough" kid with a good heart. There's also a movie out. In the book I believe Darry says that line and it means stay good-hearted and be the best person you can be.
