my son poured the whole thing of fish food in thier tank a few weeks ago, so i cleaned it out yesterday, completely changing the water and cleaned everything and i woke up this morning and they are all dead.... ive had them for a little over a year, its sad :(
anyways the question behind this....what did i do wrong? the water was 74 degrees, 2 degrees over what it should be, but i put them in a bag of their old water so that they could get used to the new temp. and once their old water was the temp. of thier new water i put them in the tank.....so that shouldnt have killed them...right??
should i change the water again before i put new fish in there??
please help, i dont want anymore fish dying!!

yes, i did everything to the water that i was supposed to, i added the chemicals, tested the temp...i really dont think that they were overfed, like i had said that it was a few weeks ago when he poured the food in there, i have a 55 gallon tank, it is not easy to clean out, thats why it was left alone for so long

Im sorry. You know sometimes fish just die and you cant really help it.
Maybe they were just shocked because the water was so clean. I would change the water again and wait for a few days before adding more fish. I have a 55 gallon tank also. It would be really sad if all my fish died.....
sorry. but good luck with the next ones. and try not to let your son handle the fish food. lol

well i don't think you did anything it just mite be your son since he put the food in like you siad and some times i should know bcuse i had fish the food will stay in the tank for sometime and then you need to clean it thro really really good and then test it and if you don't know how then take it to the pet store i bet they can test it.
and if you replace the filtter or some thing you need to wait about 1-3 weeks so the flitter can ajust to the water and i gess starlize it and get all bacteria out of the water that is not soppost to be in thare and thats all i know hope it helps good lucky
oh and by the way keep the fish food away form your son lol :)

oh sir, its not that based on fishes have you learnt about the theories of fishes its not that it can die due to the light modiffication of temperatures as such the only thing is have you seen the fishes at the sides there is a layer behind the gills only for tis layer not to get stuck with gills the fishes move around shaking its head. The fact might be that you have served a lot of food which the fishes ate a lot and have not been shaking head for long time the layer might have stuck .
and another fact is that you have mentioned that you cleaned the water a long time after ie... weeks later thus automatically showing that you have not been watching it properly. propebly even that the water's dirtyness etc
one more question is that you might have dropped pond fishes and sea fishes together that is why the sea fishes have killed them and died this is the dangerous thing and really bad one

You did nothing, what killed the fish was your son pouring all of the food in the tank. They over ate, which killed them. When you go buy a new fish you should clean the tank once more to be sure. Oh, and tell your son just two small pinches of food.

The fish ate themselves to death and the water was quickly fouled with bacteria shortly after he dumped the food into the tank. Also, the decaying fish food raised the ammonia levels in the tank, causing the fish to die. Buy a pH and Ammonia tes kit to check the water before you introduce new fish into it. Also, I suggest you keep the fish food out of reach of your child so that this will not happen again.

no don't change the water the batc. is good for most fish, and sorry but they most likely died from the over feeding..... just don't tell you son that! (got a 4 year that did that once lucky we caught him and were able to scoop put most of the extra food!)

One time we had fish and my dad cleaned the tank and changed the water and the next morning all but two were dead. ;_;
So yeah, I'd say you shocked them. I wish I could tell you what breed had survived, but it was years ago. I remember they were orange, though (but not goldfish).

You shocked them.. I did them same thing with a fish of mine.. Yes you need to change the water before putting in new fish.. Talk to your pet store they can help you. also take them a sample of you water and have them test it.

Well they could have over-eaten and that could have killed them... it could have been that they're old water was dirty... they could have had a disease... a lot of things could have happened. I'm sorry and I feel your pain:( (I think it would be good to visit a vet to see the possibilities

Never let your son feed them again because they might have eaten too much.
