My mother in law is fixing to be 57 in March of 07 and her husband died 3 year ago as of Jan. 7th. She ad not worked previously because he had altzheimers and so she had to stay home with him. Since his death, she has gotten a job but is still barely making it. Is there any way she can get any social security from his death? Any help is appreciated!! Thanks!!

I believe she received a check for $200 upon his death. Unfortunately until she reaches the age of 60, she cannot get his social security. My mother is in the same boat. My father died almost 9 years ago and she will be getting his ss this coming year when she turn 60. Its sad, but very true. She can call the s.s. admin, but I doubt she is entitled to anything until her 60th b-day. Hope this helps.

First of all for all you out there, everyones case is different. Not everyone gets the same benefit amount. Theres many aspects and situations to how a social security or ssi check is distributed.

As for your mother in law, tell her to visit her local SSA Office. She could apply for Widows Benefits. If and only if her husband worked enough and earned enough credits before his death.
Each case is different so have her come into an office and speak to one of the representatives.

Write to the US Social Security Administration. Give all details, especially the deceased person's name, SS-number, etc. and ask what benefits have accumulated, with emphasis on "survivor's benefits".

If she was illegal the benefits would be endless but if she is American she's on her own!
