If he wants to run both operating systems it's a great solution with the best of all worlds. He can dual boot or run windows (& linux) virtually within OS X using parallels which works great. An ideal solution for those that need to run more than one OS. In fact parallels can run windows apps size by side with Mac apps now. If however he only wants to run windows then it's a bit pointless.

First of all, an Apple laptop is no more or less "normal" than any other. Use some other term.
Second...Apple's computers are excellent pieces of hardware. Your son will be making a very good choice to go with a Mac, particularly if he only needs Windows for a few applications. Mac OS X is a far better operating system than Windows -- in fact, most people have no need for Windows at all (your son may not even need to have it on his laptop). If your son intends to run Mac OS X and minimize his use of Windows, he is making a very good choice indeed.
Finally, at least in the US, Apple gives huge discounts to people with any sort of academic affiliation. If your son is a trainee schoolteacher, he should qualify for a discount. £1100 sounds like a ridiculously high price for a MacBook -- you should be able to get one for much less. (Of course, I don't know much about non-US pricing, so I could be wrong.)

For the extra cost I'd recommend buying a very good Windows laptop or buying the Apple laptop but not installing Windows.

Apples are technically superior, but so's the price. I would imagine that your son needs to count the pennies carefully, so he might want to consider settling for a good-quality Windows-based machine instead. There are some really excellent machines out there, especially if he forgoes the super-duper gaming equipment and concentrates on what he really needs.
Have a look on Dell's website and experiment with specifying a machine to suit. Oh, and another money-saving tip, instead of Microsoft Office, consider downloading Open Office absolutely free!

This is the classic Merc vs BMW dilemma - once a merc fan always a merc fan, but you'll never convince a BMW driver that there is any better car in the world, either.
They'll both do the job - Apple is technically superior in many fields, esp. DTP.
BUT - just from the way you word your question you can see that Microsoft "owns" the market - you don't even name them, but it's MS - they've got 90-95% coverage (footprint) and they're cheaper.
Whatever you buy, by the time you've untwisted the tie-wraps around the cables it'll be obsolete (that's how the hardware market works).

Apple laptops rock. It's worth the extra to have Boot Camp run Windows... it's not Virtual PC any more.

Either or....I use a mac...and the joy of it is it is really secure...no annoying daily updates as it works! The downside being if he is used to using windows...the Mac operating system is different.
If he wants windows...I'd say stick to as good a laptop as he can afford/ or go Apple.

dont run virtual pc on a mac unless you are really in need of it for business. If he is only doing a PGCE or a Bed then a 500 pound laptop from PC world will do fine
The mac is so much better and will run all the microsoft office stuff anyway without needing XP

Apple is so much better but it does get expensive. If you want to go the cheaper route I would buy a PC but if you want it to last and more bang for your buck I'd go with the Apple.
