There are tons. Try Google but here are a few good ones to get you started:
Torrentspy
thepiratebay
demonoid
torrentbox

For a client try utorrent. It's an extremely light weight app being both small and uses little resources. It's also very stable. Stay away from BitLord as it's just a spyware infected version of BitComet. BitComet was a good client but it's no longer supported for updates an is now being banned from a lot of torrent servers.
Also get PeerGuardian2. Install, update and run with your bittorrent client. It blocks most of the IPs that the RIAA and others use to track BT downloads.
As an extra, switch to Mozilla Firefox for web browsing. It's more secure than IE7, faster and easier to use. There are tons add ons like torrent search engines for torrentspy and torrentbox and a toolbar called torrent-search toolbar that'll let you hit a long list of torrent search sites.
Good luck and happy BTing!
Happy New Year!!!!

mininova.org
torrentspy.com
isohunt.com (which covers just about all of the sites, including the above two).

Mind you, some of these sites are private and registration is required.
