My friend is on a lease with her (now) ex-boyfriend in a one bedroom apartment in Florida. He has not been contributing to the bills (rent, electric, etc.) for at least two months. Now since they've broken up, he won't leave and harasses her constantly -- calling at least 20 times a day. Needless to say, she's had to stay with whichever friend has an empty couch. So, she's paying for him to live there while she had to bum it at someone elses. He's said he would leave and then took it back. He's always there "waiting for her". We're a little freaked out! Is there anything she can do to get him out of her life? We've been racking our brains.

She needs to take her name off the lease and bills immediately! She does not owe him anything and needs to stop paying for him to live there. She needs to take care of herself.

Now, if he continues to harass her, she can go down to the police station and file charges or get a restraining order against him. Stalking and harassment is against the law.

I've known girls in similar situations. It's tough to get out of a lease. Once the papers are signed, that's it, you're stuck. And her telling them some sob story isn't going to do it. The easiest and most effective thing for her to do is to get her employer involved. I've found that if an employer writes a letter stating that you're position is being transferred to another office out of state, they'll terminate the lease. They don't even look into whether or not it's true. Because the employer can easily say there's been a change of plans, they don't bother checking. Anything else, she'll probably have to go to court and there's legal fees and headaches to deal with.

Has she tried being an absolute nightmare herself??? she has allot to loose with credit black marking or months of hefty bills- claiming through a small claims court is all very well if he is cooperating but my Friend tried re claiming over 7k worth of bills from her ex and he just claimed that he was out of the country for the court date (which he wasn't) and got away with it.

Has she got any beefy male friends that could move in? throw parties, have people in the flat constantly that want nothing to do with him, smoke, get another man and have some loud sessions in every room, take up drum and bass music, call his mum! Sounds like he is a petty and vindictive, doesn't sound like he is pleased with the break up, either way, if she can make him feel like being rid of her is the best news of the year he will move out. Does he work? - launch a complaint campaign against him.

Get Medieval on his *** - you know him, get into his life and make every day a misery. Wake up calls!!! Every man just loves being woken up at 4am don't they?

If he is waiting for her - why doesn't she call him and say she wants to have a talk at a bar (his favorite) and watch the house - when he leaves get in there and change the locks - takes 2 mins and all you need is a screw driver and a lock barrel - shouldn't cost more than £5.00.

Good luck!

She needs to contact the owner of the property and tell them that the other person is not paying their half of the rent. She also needs to pay her half of the rent directly to the owner, with a note each month saying this is her half of a shared tenancy agreement.

The landlord will take steps to evict the guy.

She has a right to reside at the property; if the guy is making that difficult or impossible, she should contact the police. She may be able to get a restraining order to keep him out if he has been violent or issued any threats against her.

If her name isn't on the lease, have her cancel all utilities in her name, and then find a new place to live.

If her name is on the lease, then call the cops and have him evicted.

This isn't 3rd grade. Just because he 'took back' his promise to move out doesn't mean that nothing can be done here.

She could speak with the landlord to get the lease changed to his name only, but he will have to sign all the papers (which sounds unlikely).

She could stop paying the rent and let him be evicted, but that will be a black mark against her credit.

She could pursue a restraining order, but I'm not sure what implications that has for a joint residence.

She can take him to small claims court to recover his half of the rent. (I suggest she pursue this.)

Other than that, she just needs to wait for the lease to end and be a helluva lot more careful who she signs a lease with.

If it is a one bedroom apartment, my guess is that only one of their names is on the lease.

If it is her name - call the cops and have him thrown out

If it is his name - cancel any utilities that are in her name and find a new place to live.

If both of their names are on the lease - talk to the landlord
