My friend works at the Embassy in Cairo. He says:
1. Never bring cash. Ever.
2. Cash Advance is the easiest and most reliable, particularly if you have Visa or Mastercard.
3. Debit is least costly in many cases, but not all banks in Cairo will support a debit card.
4. Traveler's checks are always reliable, but there is a fee, and some vendors are shunning these over Mastercard/Visa since the paper variety takes longer to actually get the real money back.

My husband and I travel a lot. My advice is to bring only enough cash for miscellaneous out of pocket expenses, like tips and taxi fare. Otherwise, try to use credit cards as much as possible. Each credit card company charges about 1-3% service fee for international purchases. If the credit card is issued by a bank like Chase, the bank will usually charge another 1%. The best thing to do is call up and inform the credit card company that you intend to use the credit card in Egypt and also ask what the service charge will be. The reason why I like to use the credit card instead of the debit card is that if anything goes wrong, I can report it to the credit card company and get issued a temporary credit right away. If someone steals your debit card, it's nearly impossible to get the charges reversed and get your money back fast. Also, if anything breaks or is otherwise faulty you can also report it and get a refund.

I think cash is easiest...forget travellers checks and if you have a Capital One card they don't charge you an exchange rate fee. I used it and a visa with no problems. I hestitate using a debit card just in case there is a problem that arises. The bank in the hotel I stayed at Semiramus, was open 24 hours so it is no problem to change cash and most everyone took American money or wanted British Pounds as far as street vendors went.

When in Egypt it is better to bring cash.Credit cards, debit cards etc. are only used in big upmarket stores. It is better carry cash.
In fact it s better to carry cash whenever you are visiting any of the developing African or Asian countries, because people here are not adept to carrying plastic money.
