I am petsitting a fish for my neighbors while they are away. The fish is probably new because the "tank" is just a small basic jar with water and the goldfish in it. There is no filter. I need to change the water every other day, but they never left specific details. I do not own a fish and I need to know.
a) Is tap water ok to use, if not then what kind of water?
b) What should the temperature of the water be? (hot, warm, cool, cold)
c) is there anything else I need to know?
I have petsit fish that have filters so I know how to feed the fish, but I need advice on changing the water.
Thank you

Simple, just remove the fish from the tank with enough water from the bowl for the fish to sit in and still stay alive. You can use tap water but it does need to be somewhat cool, not cold! Just a hair warm, use the underside of your wrist to check the temp. Same as for checking a baby's bottle. Make sure you scrub the bowl with a little dish soap and hot water once you removed the fish. Rinse really well, add your water and then the fish with the remaining water he is in. Then feed and he should be just fine. Again make sure you put fresh water in the bowl before adding the fish back. You can also leave the water in the bowl for a couple of hours just to make sure that it's room temp. or you feel comfortable adding the fish back.

NO SOAPS! or be prepared to buy new fish.

They should have a bottle of water drops such as Tap water conditioner as well as other things for fish care.
If not this is what you need and need to do.

You put the fish in a clean - never used foam or plastic cup with water from his bowl(use a net if they have one -if not you can tear a foam cut to make a scoop).Drain water,if there is gravel in bowl run warm water in bowl and use your clean hands to swish and clean it ..you can then put the gravel and anything else in the bowl as you clean it in the same manner in another clean cup.If bowl is really dirty use a paper towel and use water only to clean it with..rinse bowl..put cleaned gravel, plants and put tepid water in bowl..put water drops in bowl..let set for about 30 minutes to let the water temp to adjust..take fish and gently pour him back in bowl..if some of the dirty water gets back in bowl it will not hurt..in fact it can help his water become more suitable again.

If the bowl was really dirty he may have of been over fed.
Best setup for a goldfish is a beta tank with filter.
It helps keep the water clean and less times to clean it.

I keep a supply of foam cups and a plastic bowl that has never been used for anything other than fish tank cleaning and a net drops and other fish supplies in a cabinet that has no other things to contaminate it.

OK, you need bottled water like spring water or distilled water, take the fish out and place it in a large enough cup so he can swim with some of the old water. take out any decorations and rocks/gravel. these you can rinse in plain tap water. clean the bowl with tap water as well, you shouldn't use soap unless the bowl is really gross. Towel dry the bowl and replace the rocks/gravel put about 1/4 of the "new" water then the remaining decorations. fill till about 3/4's fill and put fishie with old water in to bowl and finish filling. (remember not to full some fish will jump out if the water is close enough to the edge, i know i have had a beta do it to me!!) room temp is good

pour away some of the tank water(do not pour all away!) then add some tapwater inside.... if the fish is sick, you can try putting some salt in the tank.
