His eye can be opened a little bit, but no where near as much as his left eye can. I have never taken him or my other hamsters to a vet and know it will be quite expensive. Is there anything that I might be able to try at home to make it better?

Male/ ? years old/either syberian or chinese dwarf hamster

Take a warm wet cloth and gently wipe your hamster's eye. Not only will it make his/her eye feel a little better, it will help him/her to open its eye. Do it about 3 times a day if you can.

I wouldnt use a towel on a tiny little hamster. Use some cotton wool with warm water a few times a day. It sounds as though its got dust particles in its eye. I wouldnt worry! But if this doesnt work, take him to the vet as he might have scratched his eye a little.

He could have an eye infection, or over abundance of the mucus type stuff that forms around your eye. The mucus and dry and seal the eye shut.

For either, get a warm cloth and gently rub the mucus off.

If the problem is persistant, contact your vet.

GOOD LUCK

You really need to take it to the vet trying anything on your own could cause harm to the small animal.
If holding a warm towel to its eye does not work like the other folks here sugessed take it to the vet.
Good luck

He probably has an eye infection. As mentioned above, wipe his eye with a warm, moist towel a few times a day.

Also, don't forget to change his bedding and wash out his cage.

It could be allergic to it's bedding... Try changing that, and if you can pick him up, try holding a warm, wet cloth to the eye several times a day.
