He did it by accident - he was being chased by terrorists that Doc Brown stole plutonium from and when the car reached 88 miles an hour, he was gone.

On October 25, 1985, Marty McFly, a 17-year old high school senior, visits the home of his friend, an eccentric local scientist named Dr. Emmett L Brown, but finds that "the Doc" is not there. Marty soon receives a call from Doc himself asking him to meet him at 1:15 AM in the parking lot at Twin Pines mall. As Marty agrees, the clocks in Doc's basement chime the hour. When Doc Brown remarks that the clocks are 25 minutes behind, proof that an experiment was successful, Marty realizes that he is late for school.Marty meets Doctor Brown at the mall to witness and film a demonstration of Doc's latest invention: a time-machine made from a modified DeLorean sports car, which must reach 88 miles-per-hour in order to travel through time. Doc tests the car by sending his dog Einstein one minute into the future.
Overjoyed by this success, Doc demonstrates to Marty how the time machine works, entering several significant dates into the keypad, followed by November 5, 1955. Doc explains to Marty that this was the day that he came up with the idea for the flux capacitor, the device that makes time travel possible.
After Doc refuels the time machine, a group of Libyan terrorists arrive, from whom he stole the plutonium necessary to power the time machine. The Libyans kill Doc, but Marty escapes in the DeLorean, accelerating to 88 miles per hour and thus inadvertently sending himself thirty years back in time to November 5, 1955. The plutonium necessary to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity required to make one jump in time is left in 1985.

It was an accident. When the terrorists showed up and killed Doc, he jumped into the Delorean and raced to get away. During his previous lecture while Marty was filming on how to set the controls, Doc had left the December 5, 1955 date programmed in (the date he had the accident and envisioned the flux capacitor) so when Marty punched the DeLorean up past 88 mph, the flux capacitor activated and sent Marty back to that date.

It was an accident that occurred when Marty (MJ Fox) was trying to escape Libyan terrorists from whom Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) had procured the necessary plutonium for his experiments. In trying to escape in the car, Marty accidentally activates the time circuits and accelerates it to 88 miles per hour, the required velocity for the time jump.

Because they were trialing the new time machine in the car park when they was attacked by the libians. He drove the car to get away after the doc was shot. The flux capacitor kicks in at 88 mph and Marty hit 90mph. The doc had already set the time machine to 1955 prior to the attack.

the doc got shot by terrorists over plutonium and michael got into the the car to escape, the car was already set to 1955, so when it got to 88 mph the car automaticaly went back in time

It was an accident, he was fleeing the Libyans and hit 88 in the Delorean, which was set to 1955 by Emmet because it was his notable date in history (the day he created time travel)

it was a trial run but when he saw the doc being killed in the present his ambition when he went back was to save the doc. whilst doing that he almost messed up his future thats what made the whole film.

He was trying to go back and tell Doc not to buy the plutonium from the terrorists.

it was an accident. he saw some men kill the doc, so he jumped in the car in an attempt to get away from them. he didn't believe it was a time machine and got sent back to the 1950's, where he broke the car. then hilarity in sues.
