I believe that some people are born with a higher IQ than others, but other facts such as education have to play a part.
However look at the bumbling professor, (and I know one) Brilliant in their chosen field, but at simple things that others take for granted they can struggle. Their intelligence seems to diminish other parts of their lives.
I think a thirst for knowledge helps too. Someone who wants to know how something works will apply themselves to find out. They will not accept simple explanations, but look at things sceptically until they understand what is happening. This can be frustrating and very hard work.
Edison said that invention is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.

First of all, being smart/intelligent does not necessarily make you wise. Intelligence (or being smart) is having worldly knowledge. Being wise is having non-worldly, or as many people see it "spiritual" knowledge. Now, a few of the reasons that some people are smarter/more intelligent than others, so far as I know include inheritance, studies, and influence from their environment. Wisdom is purely (to my understanding) the result of willingness to learn and to accept what we DON'T know. Intelligence is the result of that, too.

they're just not lazy.
it isn't so much a question of genetics ( we're discussing Mr or Miss average i trust?) , it's about curiosity.
some people will make the effort to find answers to the questions that puzzle them, whilst others just can't be bothered.
if intelligence can be defined as: "the ability to learn", we all learn.
if wisdom is :"the ability to use our knowledge well", we're all quite capable of that:; with a bit of effort of course.
there's one more thing. I've always held that there's no better start than having a good teacher. if this is true then, education is the individuals fortune or misfortune, not a measure if their abilities.

because they read books on history, philosophy etc. however just because one is smarter or intelligent doesn't automatically mean they are wise. there are and were people who were intelligent but of whom eventually used their knowledge for the bad and were evil, such as Adolf Hitler and saddam hussein for example. there is the clear distinction made between being intelligent and knowledgable.
therefore being smart doesn't always mean they are a good people- it all comes down to how one applies that knowledge and whether it will either assist or offend others

I find that inteligence comes in differant forms , i am by my friends considerd fairly inteligent , years ago when on my travels i wandered down a market in Marakesh and i watched fascinated as a young lad of about 16 years old worked a bowl , when i inspected the bowl it was of a charging knight in full armour it was gold work beaten into grooved out lines , it was the work of a master craftsman , not in a million years could i do such work and it took him just 2 hours from start to finish , when i enquired how he had acquired such skills he said he watched his dad . He could neither read nor write in any language

People generally use what they are good at to show off there intellect, someone who is well versed in Shakspeare will oft quote the bard to impress those around him/her,likewise someone who has a good knowledge of IT will often talk about how they solved this problem saying things like"well it was quite simple really all I did was",and then talk techno babble to impress those around him/her.
No-one is clever at everything ,but it's only really showoffs and the insecure who like to talk themselves up .
I used to know someone who spoke French and German very well and would often leave books written in those languages lying around at work for people to see ,so when they wondered who it belonged to he could step in and say "oh that's where I left it ,thanx,oh and yes I do speak the language",But when the inlet manifold on his rover100 needed replacing (well it was a while ago) it was me he was paying to fit a new one.

I believe it has much to do with their awareness of the world around them and their interest/commitment to learn all they can. Genes go a long way to dictate an IQ - but without a desire to learn and use that IQ - it could be wasted on some.
People in their thirties and younger are victims of a declining educational system...with very little emphasis on spelling and grammar. But it speaks volumes about one's wisdom if they choose to blame a lacking education on their own shortcomings. If you choose to represent yourself as an illiterate simply because you haven't had good schooling - that is your choice, and you should be prepared to face the ridicule and descrimination from those in positions of authority.

I don't believe it's just about learning. It's about how our brain is built and it's capacity for sense, information and knowledge. Some people are inherently wise but not well educated, and there are some who are well educated but who do not have basic common sense. How we use the information we receive, how we interpret it, and how we put it into use in our daily lives. And, I it's in different areas - some have a capacity for science, some math, some for daily living and some for baking cookies and making us feel really really good. I think we all have areas that we excel in but many just haven't gotten in touch with it.

We are all put here as part of a big game. We are all different, and the game is to see which ones do what to get ahead. Some succeed by hard work, good fortune, or cheating, and others have their intellect in their favour.
