Because a child's mind is full of magical thoughts and fairy tales. They've grown up reading Humpty Dumpty, Dr. Suess and all the others so why can't we give them a little bit of magic at Christmas. Only cruel grinches wouldn't allow their children to feel that magical feeling. That's the problem with people today - we don't let kids be kids anymore. They grow up too fast because of us!

Not all Mom's do.....
The way I have approached this is to explain about Santa, elves, workshops, and reindeer belonging to stories. There are many wonderful stories- Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules on and on....
I explain that it is part of our culture; and that some people tell their children that Santa and that particular story is true because they think it is fun. Also, that they are not to tell the children at school that it is not true unless the other child brings it up first.
This way, we can enjoy the story but I don't have to contend with the eventuality of confusion and telling untruths.

Because this is what gives children the gift of imagination and, more importantly, innocence. Life was so much better when I believed in Santa.

It's a fun tradition. Our parents did it to us, and we enjoyed the myth. Why not share joyful experiences with our own kids? There will be plenty of time for 'reality' later on.
