Why don't the 'big bones' stick out any where? I have seen bones in biology class, at the doctors office and the museum and they have all been pretty thin, is there some where I can see some of these big bones?

Most frames are hereditary, however occasionally you might find bony structure which is slightly larger than others, but for the most part this is not true according to what I have witnessed. I have been taking x-rays for 101/2 yrs and I have seen thousands of bones.

Usually a person with a larger or more muscular frame will say they have big bones. What they really mean is that their weight is not just a result of fat alone but of muscle.

When someone says they are big boned they are usually referring to a body type and not actually their bone size. For example if a small framed woman, say 5'2, weighs 200lbs with 40% body fat could look morbidly obese. Where as a 5'10 woman that works out regularly could weigh 200lbs with 15% body fat and look alot thinner.

People will then say she's not really fat she just has big bones.

Being "big boned" is the ancient excuse for being fat. My wrists are very, very small, which tells me I am small-boned. All my life my mother explained my fatness away by saying I was big-boned. God made us all the same. We are conditioned by humans from the day we were born. Sometimes humans lie and they don't even know they are lying. The point is to love yourself and others, no matter of size, shape, color, gender or culture.

There are different sized frames - small, medium, and large. I have a friend who is quite obviously small framed. I, however, have a medium to large frame. We are the same height, but if I get down to her weight, I look more sickly because of my structure. I can carry weight better than she can. I don't think it's a huge difference, and I also don't think they grow over time once you've reached adulthood.
It seems there is a method to determine your frame size by making a circle around your wrist with your thumb and middle finger. If they just touch, you're medium; overlapping is small; if they don't meet ~ large.

People do use this phrase as an excuse, too.

I don't know if there is such a thing but i've been saying it for years. I just need to lose weight and I might not be as big boned as I think.

Is this a serious question? Bones don't get bigger, LOL. "Big Boned" is nothing more than a nicer way to say FAT.

It's a lame excuse they use to explain their obesity. All my sisters have used this excuse for years. Recently they both had surgery to reduce their food intake capacity. The fat is gone now and they have returned to thier normal skinny, selves.

some people are larger framed, but it's the padding on the bones - not the bones themselves!
