Hey, thanks for asking that - it made me look it up!
It's an aglet or aiglet.
The word "aglet" (or "aiglet") comes from Old French "aguillette" (or "aiguillette"), which is the diminutive of "aguille" (or "aiguilee"), meaning "needle". This in turn comes from the original Latin word for needle: "acus".

The small plastic (or different cloth) sheath on the tip of shoe laces is formally referred to as an aglet. This sheath is meant to make it available to bypass a lace, cord or ribbon by eyelet holes and likewise keeps the braid of the lace from unravelling. I constantly forget approximately what its referred to as too!:P wish I helped:) ?
